Feline Normal Values
Heart Rate
Heartbeat can be felt behind the left elbow, on the chest. Count the number of beats for 1 minute (or for 15 seconds multiplied by 4).
Normal value: 120-240 beats per minute.
Respiratory Rate
Respiratory (or breathing) rate should be counted by watching the chest rise and lower. It is easiest when your pet is lying on his or her side. Count as you would for the heart rate.
Normal value: 20-40 breaths per minute.
Temperature
Use a pediatric rectal or digital thermometer.
Lubricate the tip and insert into the rectum for 2-3 minutes.
Normal value: 100.5° - 102.5°
Mucous membrane color
Mucous membrane color determines if enough oxygen is getting into your pet's bloodstream. Lift the upper or lower lip and make note of your pet's normal pink gum color (not the pigmented areas). Then, with a finger, press and release on the gums. Count the seconds until the color returns.
Normal color return time: 1-2 seconds
