Keeping Your Cats and Dogs Safe in Cold Weather
- If your pet lives outdoors make sure it has a warm dry, sheltered place to sleep and unlimited access to fresh unfrozen water.
- Outdoor cats or other animals may choose to sleep under the hoods of cars where it is warmer. Remember to tap on the hood of your car prior to the starting of the engine.
- Never let your dog off leash during a snow storm as dogs can lose their scent on snow and ice and become lost. More dogs are lost during the winter season than any other season.
- If you are the owner of a dog or cat with short hair, invest in warm sweater for outdoor activities.
- Check ears and paws frequently for signs of frostbite. Paws may become dry and cracked due to exposure. If this occurs, apply Vaseline, or in severe cases contact your veterinarian.
