A Cat Named Bleu
We are all senior citizens at the Sholts house, but our senior pet is our cat Bleu. Bleu joined a household of four adults, one child, three very rambunctious Border Collies, and another cat. I adopted her at work for our then one-year old grandson as he and his parents were living with us at the time.

She was from a litter of kittens found on the Maple Bluff Golf Course by the Animal Health Technician. She was scarcely more than a handful of white fluff with bright blue eyes, hence her name.

Little but mighty, Bleu soon found her niche and made fast friends with all her animal housemates. Our extended family moved on to an apartment that did not allow pets so Bleu stayed on with us. She is the last of the animals still living and is now thirteen years old. The moment I settle into the overstuffed recliner in the evening she hops up onto the left armrest and stays there until I retire for the night.

A Dog named Sean
I had a dog named Sean through my childhood to adulthood. He was a mix: collie, shepherd, maybe Samoyed. He was a wonderful dog, gentle and friendly with everyone. He always knew when to give you a kiss, especially when you were down. He also loved to snuggle-- sometimes he would even sleep on your chest.

Sean's only fault was that he liked to run and jump the fence-he loved his freedom. Even when he was older Sean loved to get into everyone else's gardens, yards and flowers.

Now that I am older I realize that chasing after a dog actually makes them run faster. I imagine Sean was thinking "this is a great game-my owners are having a blast chasing me down the street and through the neighborhood". It was very sad when he passed away but now I always envision him running in fields, flowers, and pastures.

Mindy, a Great Companion
I got Mindy, a Border Collie/collie cross when I was ten years old. She was a great companion on all my hiking adventures, horseback riding, jogging and just laying in the back yard.

Mindy spent every day of middle school and high school with me, then became my mom's walking partner when I left for college. Her black face grew gray and her legs slowed down, but she never turned down an invitation for a walk. We were lucky to have Mindy for 14-1/2 years, and will always remember her gentle and quiet devotion...

A 43-Year-Old Horse Named Cody
I have a 43 year old horse named Cody. She was my first horse. When I was little I would canter her in the alfalfa field when I was riding. When we got near the end of the field she would suddenly stop and put her head down to eat. Not expecting it, I would fall down her neck and onto the ground. My mother got it on video tape and we still laugh at it today.

A Pony Named Spice
I have a 23 year old pony named Spice. When I was a little girl I used to just "get-on-and-go". I loved carrying things while on her back like cones, juice boxes, or barrels. There was just one problem: Spice didn't like it. Every time I did so she would throw me. I never learned from it so I just kept getting thrown.
